Hi, I'm Dr. Shabnam Pedram. I founded Gentle Dentistry of Poway because I kept meeting people who wanted a brighter smile but had been burned by one-size-fits-all whitening kits, or who whitened without anyone checking their gums first. If you live in Poway, Rancho Bernardo, or Scripps Ranch and you are thinking about whitening, this is how I walk patients through the decision.
Why I Will Not Whiten Without an Exam
Whitening gel is safe for most healthy mouths, but it is not harmless on inflamed gums or untreated decay. Before we talk about shades, I look for cavities, recession, cracks, and existing crowns or fillings. Those restorations do not lighten the way enamel does. If we skip that step, you can end up with teeth that look brighter next to work that suddenly looks too dark. That is fixable, but it is frustrating, and I would rather explain it upfront.
When whitening makes sense, we choose between in-office whitening and custom take-home trays. Some patients do both. The right path depends on your timeline, sensitivity history, and how even your enamel is to begin with.

What Professional Whitening Actually Changes
Coffee, tea, red wine, and years of everyday wear leave stains in the outer layers of enamel. Professional products use higher-quality peroxide in a controlled setting, with barriers for your gums when we work in the office. Drugstore strips often use weaker gel on a generic strip that does not fit your arch. That is why people tell me their front teeth look patchy or their gums sting for days.
I also set expectations. Whitening improves color. It does not change the shape of a tooth, close a large gap, or cover a chip. When the issue is structure, not shade, we talk about porcelain veneers or bonding inside our cosmetic dentistry menu instead of selling you another round of gel.
Proof on the Page: Real Smiles From Our Office
I can describe results all day. Patients prefer to see them. These are before-and-after photos from cases we completed here on Pomerado Road. Every mouth is different, but they show the kind of change careful planning can produce when whitening is combined with the rest of your smile goals.

More photos live on our patient smile gallery. If you want to compare your own starting point, bring photos to a consult or ask our team to walk you through cases similar to yours.
Sensitivity, Maintenance, and Honest Timelines
Tooth sensitivity after whitening is common and usually short-lived. Tell me if you already react to cold drinks. We can shorten sessions, add desensitizing products, or favor take-home trays at a slower pace. Results are not permanent. Habits matter. Rinsing after dark beverages and keeping regular cleanings helps. When stains creep back, touch-up gel in fitted trays is often enough.
When Whitening Is Not the Answer
Sometimes the fastest path to the smile you want is not bleaching at all. Deep gray tones from old trauma, thin enamel, or certain medications may respond poorly. In those cases I would rather show you veneers, Invisalign, or a phased smile makeover than promise a shade your enamel cannot reach.
If you have been putting off dental care because of anxiety, know that we also offer sedation options. Whitening should feel boring and predictable, not stressful.
