TMJ disorders (temporomandibular joint disorders) affect millions of Americans, causing jaw pain, headaches, clicking or popping sounds, and difficulty chewing. At Gentle Dentistry of Poway, we offer comprehensive TMJ evaluation and treatment to help you find lasting relief.
What Is TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull and acts like a sliding hinge. When this joint or the surrounding muscles are damaged or inflamed, it causes a range of symptoms collectively called TMD (temporomandibular disorder).
Common TMJ Symptoms
- Jaw pain or soreness, especially in the morning
- Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening/closing the mouth
- Headaches, earaches, or facial pain
- Difficulty or discomfort while chewing
- Locking of the jaw
- Neck and shoulder tension
What Causes TMJ Disorders?
TMJ disorders can result from teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw injury, arthritis, stress, or structural issues with the joint itself. Many patients grind their teeth at night without realizing it — often causing significant wear and jaw strain.
TMJ Treatment Options at Gentle Dentistry of Poway
We offer several effective treatment approaches: custom night guards to prevent grinding, bite adjustments to reduce strain, and in some cases, Botox injections into the jaw muscles to relieve tension (offered as part of our facial aesthetics services). We take a conservative approach first before recommending more invasive treatments.
